This edition will include:

A gentle reminder that there is no cost or obligation for receiving my monthly e-zine tidbits. This is a free service being offered to anyone who wants to receive it. Thank you, Gail Merkel

Buy Local

If you have access to buy locally grown foods and/or farmers markets, I would strongly encourage you to purchase foods in this way. You will find these foods to be healthier for you and taste better. The foods are fresher and will contain more of the original nutrients. This is a good way to support the local economy too!!

These foods can be less costly for many reasons. An example for me was to purchase home grown canned tomatoes from one vendor. Another vendor was selling fresh herbs like basil, garlic, and thyme. I made my own tomato sauce just with these 2 purchases.

When looking for higher quality fruits and vegetables, shop the outer areas of the food store you use. Avoid the center isles which contain the boxed and processed foods. These are detrimental to our bodies.

Freezing Berries

Another example of nutritional healing for you is to purchase fresh picked berries and place on a cookie sheet. Then place them in the freezer. When frozen, place the berries in a container or bag.

You will have fresh berries in the winter months to enjoy on oatmeal or other uses.

Aquaponics

Recently I became aware of aquaponics from another vendor at the farmers market.

Aquaponics is “controlled growing of fish and plants in a re-circulating water system.

There are no dangerous pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, growth hormones, and pathogens that caused the recalls and e-coli scares of the past few years.”

Aquaponics is a way to have fresh produce and fish all year long. “With the loss of so much farm land due to development plus all the air, water, and soil pollution aquaponics is the future of growing food for the world.”

I included a section from my website about healing nutritionally with Heart Health Recipes. This may be helpful information or reminders at least.

Finally, I wanted to share what Dr. Oz had on a recent show.

The following foods have many chemicals detected. If you are unable to purchase the following organically, he suggests:

1. Spinach--purchase frozen spinach to avoid the chemicals added. It goes through a specific cleaning process prior to freezing.

2. Strawberries--soak in water for 2 minutes, then follow with another water rinse.

3. Apples--wash and then peal the skin off.

4. Peaches--the fuzz holds onto the pesticides. Use a brush to scrub the skins or peal the peach.
